Choosing Doors Based on Function & Esthetics
For many people, a door is a door, but contractors understand the vast differences that exist and how to choose the best one for each door installation.

Interior Doors
Some interior doors are hollow, lacking any insulation or sound proofing. Their function is twofold: to separate spaces to ensure privacy and to add an aesthetic appeal. They are often made of wood, which makes for a more economical door. Other interior doors are solid.

Exterior Doors
Exterior doors, however, are exposed to extreme temperature differences and weather conditions. They are filled with insulation and function as a thick, heavy-duty barrier to outside elements. They are often made of steel or another type of metal and are more expensive than wood doors.
Whether interior or exterior, there are many options and variations depending upon the industry and use of each door:
- Metal fire doors
- Metal doors with a glass panel for viewing
- Security doors, which are thicker doors complete with several deadbolts
- Bullet-resistant doors
- Louvered doors (with air vents)
- Paneled doors for décor
- Temperature-rise door (250-degree temperature rise)
- High-traffic area doors that swing both ways
Importance of Door Hardware Functionality
In the commercial field, architects usually specify the type of hardware to be used on each door. Just like home installation, hardware can contribute to the overall esthetic appeal, but in commercial applications, function takes on greater importance. Pieces need to be of high quality and durability as they will be exposed to greater wear and tear in public or high-traffic areas. Medical facilities need to be concerned about the use of hygienic hardware as well. AIR is accustomed to working with project managers to meet the standards set for the construction process.
